The House and Senate are both back in session this week.
This is the last week that both chambers of Congress will be in session before the August recess begins.
The House is scheduled to depart for the August recess this Thursday, returning August 31, while the Senate is scheduled to remain in session until August 7, returning Sept. 14.
The House is working to get a budget resolution over the finish line and keep the government funded through Dec. 4.
The House Judiciary Committee is also hard at work. On Tuesday, the committee marked up and passed H.R. 9773, “The Permanent Trump Secure Border Act,” sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy of Texas.
When President Trump was sworn in, he took immediate, sweeping actions to secure the U.S southern border, which had been left effectively open by the Biden administration, allowing countless millions of unvetted illegals to spill in every year.
President Trump succeeded through a range of executive orders—but now those actions must be codified into law.
Although it’s not the gold standard for border security that was H.R. 2 from the last Congress, the “Permanent Trump Secure Border Act” would take significant strides toward codifying the president’s actions on the border and on mass migration.
The legislation is now starting its journey through Congress. If it succeeds, President Trump’s work to secure the border will be more likely to survive after he leaves office.
The Immigration Accountability Project describes the bill:
H.R. 9773 would permanently end catch-and-release so illegal border crossers are not allowed to enter and remain in our country. It would stop abuse of humanitarian parole by strictly defining when, how, and for how long it may be granted. It would significantly reduce asylum fraud by implementing a “safe third country” policy and mandatory detention of asylum seekers while their proceedings are pending. When an illegal alien enters the United States, the Department of Homeland Security will be left with three options: detain, return, or remove. Importantly, H.R. 9773 would amend the TVPRA (The Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act).
In other words, this legislation works through Congress the policies that the American people voted for in November of 2024.
