William Smith

Senior Fellow

As CPI Senior Fellow, William oversees CPI’s Magnus Fellowship and engages with CPI’s partners on Capitol Hill and in the executive branch. He has over 20 years of experience on Capitol Hill, where he built a reputation for identifying and training the next generation of conservative staffers. 

 During his most recent stint on Capitol Hill, William served as Chief of Staff to Congressman Gary Palmer and Executive Director of the Republican Policy Committee. 

 Prior to serving in the House of Representatives, William served under Senator Jeff Sessions as Chief Counsel on the Senate Budget and Judiciary Committees. On the Judiciary Committee, he worked on the Supreme Court confirmations of John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor. 

 William is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law and holds a Masters in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 

 He serves as an elder at Arlington Baptist Church. He and his beautiful wife, Diamond, live in Burke, Virginia with their three children, Will, Elizabeth and Benjamin. Born in Ozark Alabama, his favorite chant is “War Eagle!”
